Sparky’s Garden for Environmental Stewardship

Welcome to Sparky's Garden at ASU!

Sparky’s Garden is ASU’s Tempe campus garden and living classroom where students, faculty, and staff grow food, build community, practice and learn to steward the land in Arizona’s desert environment.

Mission:

To cultivate a vibrant student community rooted in care, cooperation, and environmental stewardship. Through hands-on gardening and shared learning, our programming deepens connections to the land and fosters character development in service of a more sustainable and flourishing campus.

Vision:

To cultivate a flourishing campus community where growing food, stewarding the land, and practicing the ASU Farm virtues shape lifelong skills and character.

Who Can Participate?

Sparky’s Garden is open to the entire ASU community - students, faculty, and staff are welcome to visit, volunteer, and learn together in the garden.

What You’ll Experience / Learn?

Our garden leader has developed a seasonal planting plan across raised beds and pollinator areas designed specifically for Arizona’s climate. Participants gain hands-on experience with:

  • Vegetable planting and seasonal growing
  • Composting and soil health
  • Irrigation and desert-adapted gardening
  • Trellising and pruning
  • Pollinator support and habitat creation

How to Get Involved

Sparky’s Garden is open to anyone who wants to stop by, explore the space, and spend time in the garden. We host volunteer days and open garden hours throughout the semester.

Sparky’s Garden brings the ASU Farm virtues to life. As participants grow food and care for the land together, they practice care, cooperation, environmental stewardship, environmental humility, adaptation, and a strong work ethic - values that guide both the garden and the broader ASU Farm community.
