History

ASU Farm originated in the spring of 2024 within The College, with special support from ASU Humanities, through the collaborative efforts of a dedicated group of core ASU faculty members, staff, and Maya Dailey from Maya’s Farm, located in South Phoenix, approximately six miles southwest of ASU’s Tempe campus. From the very beginning, ASU Farm was envisioned as more than just an agricultural initiative; it was designed to be a living laboratory that connects the university’s academic expertise with the practical knowledge of experienced local farmers. The partnership with Maya Dailey brought critical hands-on experience in sustainable farming practices, community engagement, and food systems management, helping shape the early mission and direction of ASU Farm.

The founding team was motivated to address several pressing issues, including food insecurity among ASU students, the loneliness epidemic, and challenges to food systems in the age of climate change. Guided by Principled Innovation, which places character and values at the center of decision-making, ASU Farm seeks not only to advance research and education in sustainable agriculture but also to actively contribute to the communities it serves. In this sense, the initiative cultivates both plants and people, modeling innovation that balances technological advancement with social responsibility, ecological stewardship, and community well-being.

In its first year, ASU Farm helped design new ASU courses with immersive farm activities, began managing Sparky’s Garden for Environmental Stewardship on the Tempe campus, hired Student Farm Leaders, launched a Speaker Series, developed plans for a shade structure at Maya’s Farm, donated produce to Pitchfork Pantry, and hosted numerous volunteer days at both Maya’s Farm and Sparky’s Garden.

As ASU Farm continues to grow, it stands as a model for how universities can leverage their resources, expertise, and values to make a tangible difference beyond campus boundaries. By combining rigorous research, experiential learning, and community-centered practices, ASU Farm exemplifies ASU’s commitment to ethical innovation, sustainability, and social impact. The vision that began in 2024 within The College, supported by ASU Humanities, is steadily evolving into a thriving center where knowledge, practice, and values converge to create meaningful outcomes for both the university and the broader community.
